Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College: Bad for my mailbox, bad for the environment, bad for their donors

By | March 14, 2009

I have been asking the folks at the Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College for over a year to stop sending postal mailings to our address.  According to my records, I’ve contacted them on January 4, 2008, November 21, 2008, November 22, 2008, and January 6, 2009.  During that time, they’ve sent me three mailings, one of which was a DVD which must have been wicked expensive to produce.

I’ve written to Anne Gibbons, who is listed as the theatre’s ticket manager, Lance Olson (the theatre manager), and even Jacqueline W. Liebergott, the president of Emerson College.  My emails to Gibbons and Liebergott were neither bounced nor acknowledged.  I know for a fact that Olson received my email, because he responded to it twice.

The fact that they keep sending these mailings to our address when I’ve asked them repeatedly to stop is bad three times over:

  1. It’s an annoying time-waster for me to have to deal with the junk in my mailbox and to have to keep asking them to stop sending it.
  2. It’s bad for the environment to produce and transport mailings to people who don’t want them.
  3. It is exceedingly disrespectful to the donors who support the Maj and Emerson to waste their money sending mailings to people who have asked for them to stop.

As long-time readers of my blog know, I’ve been trying for over a year to get the junk mail out of my mailbox.  The Maj has the unfortunate distinction of being one of the very few institutions, out of the hundreds I’ve contacted, that have been unable or unwilling to stop the mailings upon request.

After posting this article on my blog, I intend to send a copy of it, with the blog link, to every email address I can find for people in the Maj’s management and Emerson’s administration.  Perhaps one of them will have the good sense to realize that it is in their best interest to fix this.

The mailings aren’t for fundraising, they’re advertisements for upcoming performances at the theatre, so I don’t think the Development Office is responsible for them. But yes, I included the Development Office in the blast email I sent to Emerson last night, because the money that they’re raising from donors is the money that’s being wasted by sending mailings to people who just throw them away (recycle them, actually), and they should be worried about how their donors will react should they stumble upon a blog entry like mine.

Try contacting their Development Office directly – they’re probably the ones in charge of these mailings. And while these others SHOULD pass along your request, it may not be happening.

    Good Luck
